The Clearing is accepting applications for a Program Director. This position will have the main responsibility for planning and implementing The Clearing's program of non-resident day classes, along with planning and coordinating volunteer activities and special events. The Program Director will also help plan and implement The Clearing's resident week-long classes.
The Program Director must be able to coordinate and organize a variety of schedules, events and information, possess good verbal and written communication skills, and possess good computer skills that include being proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
The Clearing is a folk school for adults, located just outside Ellison Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. The Clearing offers a variety of classes in the arts, humanities and natural sciences. Classes range from half-day classes during winter, to one, two and three-day classes in summer and fall, to week-long classes from spring through fall, during which students and instructors reside on The Clearing’s historic campus overlooking Lake Michigan's Green Bay.

Job Responsibilities for The Clearing Program Director
Volunteer Program
- Recruit, schedule and train volunteers for Bookstore, demonstrations, tours, office support and special events
- Coordinate volunteer appreciation events
- Track and record volunteer hours
- Work with other members of The Clearing staff as needed with regard to the volunteer program
Winter Program
- Generate class ideas and recruit instructors
- Convene and chair Winter Program Committee meetings
- Coordinate the class proposal mailing and organize the information on the returned proposals
- Coordinate the catalog display ads
- Coordinate the writing and editing of all class write-ups
- Organize and coordinate instructor orientation materials
- Write press releases, as needed, to promote Winter Program classes
- Coordinate the audio-visual needs for all classes held at The Clearing
- Open and close campus buildings on class days (shared duty with other staff members)
- Coordinate, supervise and host/co-host four Friday potluck suppers
- Coordinate the Winter Program Student Display
- Work with other members of The Clearing staff as needed with regard to the Winter Program
Workshop Program
- Generate class ideas and recruit instructors
- Help review and respond to class proposals
- Contact instructors to schedule classes
- Help with the preparation and mailing of class confirmation packets
- Help organize and coordinate the writing and editing of class write-ups
- Write press releases, as needed, to promote Workshop Program classes
- Work with other members of The Clearing staff as needed with regard to the Workshop Program
Summer Program
- Host two suppers every week from early May through October
- Host one dinner (noon meal) every week from early May through October
- Host Friday supper, the Friday evening student program and reception, Saturday breakfast, Sunday supper and the Sunday evening orientation every other weekend from early May through October
- Lead the orientation tour every other Monday afternoon
- Work with other members of The Clearing staff as needed with regard to the Summer Program
Special Events
- Help plan and coordinate the Friends of the Clearing Spring and Fall Gatherings
- Help conceive, plan and coordinate community events
- Work with other members of The Clearing staff as needed with regard to the Special Events Program
Miscellaneous
- Help in the Bookstore when needed
- Help answer phones when needed
- Set up and troubleshoot audio/visual equipment when needed
- Help with light maintenance work when needed (classroom setup, opening and closing buildings, etc.)
