Class #101

Wood Turning

Robert Nelson

June 27 - July 3, 2021

instructor imageThis class will open your eyes to the possibilities of what can be done and, most importantly, what you can do and what you can make on a wood lathe. And you’ll have lots of fun in the process!

Rob will cover the basics of bowl and spindle work. If you are a beginner, Rob will introduce you to all of the equipment and tools—lathe, gouges and grinder—with special emphasis on how to properly sharpen the gouges and the various ways gouges are used. If you have some experience turning, Rob will have a variety of projects for you. He’ll also teach you how to add surface embellishments to turned pieces.

The Clearing has a very well-equipped shop for wood turning. You’ll have your own lathe, tools and supplies. If you have any of your own tools and safety equipment, please feel free to bring them along, since learning something new is usually easier with familiar tools. For everyone, safety will be a main focus throughout the week, since safety is the most important consideration in any shop.

Robert will contact students prior to class.
