Class #20

Jack & John

Jeff Doane

August 1 - August 7, 2021

instructor imageTwo excellent books were published in 2020, each with a leading character. Jack is the long awaited novel from acclaimed author, Marilynne Robinson. Jack is the prodigal son of the Presbyterian pastor in Robinson’s mythical world of Gilead, Iowa. This novel addresses Jack’s life on the margins and his romance with Della, a black high school teacher and the daughter of a pastor.

John is, indeed, John Lewis, the congressman and civil rights icon who died in 2020. His striking life story is told by eminent historian and biographer Jon Meacham in the volume His Truth Is Marching On: John Lewis and the Power of Hope. Meacham draws on decades of wide-ranging interviews with Lewis.

Engaged discussion will be the order of the day.

Please read both books prior to class. Class will follow the pattern of previous years, meeting each morning from 9:00 to 11:45, and from 7:00 to 8:30 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Jeff will contact students prior to class.
