Class #26

Kitchen Projects: A Woodworking & Forging Combination

Curt Wessel & Jeremiah Backhaus

June 16 - June 22

instructor imageThis week combines crafts, giving you the opportunity to work with both wood and metal, and to enjoy The Clearing during early summer.

You’ll begin the week with Curt, who will guide you through the safe use of power tools in the Workshop, including the table saw, jointer, drill press and planer, while you work on the wood portion of your project(s). You may choose to make a coopered container, cutting board or serving tray, and if you have time, more than one of these items.

As the week progresses, you’ll have the opportunity to spend time with Jeremiah in The Clearing’s new Forge. You’ll harness the power of the fire and your own arms to create handles, hooks or other elements that complement and complete the wood projects you made with Curt earlier in the week. The finished projects will provide you with years of enjoyment and pride!

This class is geared toward beginning level woodworking and forging, but students with all levels of experience are welcome. All materials will be supplied.

Curt Wessel builds custom furniture and cabinetry in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin and has taught a variety of woodworking classes at The Clearing. His work is found throughout Door County and is well-represented at The Clearing. He has been featured nationally in Home Furniture magazine.

Jeremiah Backhaus built his first forge when he was 11 years old. It wasn't much to look at or to work with, but it fueled a passion for metal work that continues to this day. These days, Jeremiah is self-employed as a blacksmith, producing items for the home, the shop, the barn and just about anywhere in between. Focusing on controlled hand forging, He has produced work for clients around the world. Jeremiah competed in the History Channel's forging competition show, Forged in Fire. He won that episode, earning the title Forged in Fire Champion.

Jeremiah will contact students prior to class.
Note: Students have the option to purchase a forging hammer from Jeremiah for $30.
