Class #27

Pencil Drawing

Rebecca Venn

June 23 - June 29

instructor imageIf you want to paint, you must be able to draw. Every two-dimensional work of art—oil, watercolor, colored pencil and others—is based on a drawing. If weak, the drawing will cripple the finished work of art.

In this class, you will first take the “humble” graphite pencil and explore its possibilities. Then you’ll approach color through Prismacolor pencils. These pencils lend themselves to graphic and painterly expressions.

First, you’ll work with still life. Then, weather permitting, you’ll seek out and work on subjects outdoors. Door County and The Clearing abound with interesting and evocative subjects. You will learn how to work with photographs as reference materials. Quick studies, small sketches and vignettes on white or colored papers will broaden your artistic expression. Some can be developed immediately and others at a later date. Demonstrations and individual instruction from Rebecca will help you develop your own personal style.
Rebecca Venn’s art reflects her keen interest in color and form and the natural environment. She works in a variety of mediums to help keep her eye fresh. Her work is rendered in oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, ink, graphite and colored pencil. She especially enjoys the solitude and excitement of plein air work and has frequently travelled to Door County and Miami Beach, seeking the haunting rock formations of Lake Michigan and the exotic forms of the tropical landscape. Rebecca has won several awards for her work, and has taught classes at The Clearing, the Charles A. Wustum Museum in Racine, Wisconsin, The University of Wisconsin-Parkside and in her own studio in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Her work is included in several collections in the United States and abroad. She is in the permanent collection of The New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut and The Kenosha Public Museum. Her work has been included in The Art Of Man #15 and is included in the university/college textbook Gateways To Drawing, released in January of 2019. Rebecca lives in Kenosha.
