Class #48

Creative Weaving From Nature

Carol Heil

July 26 - August 1

instructor imageWhether you’re a beginner or an experienced weaver, Creative Weaving From Nature will help you capture natural colors, shapes and textures in handwoven art. Imagine weaving a serene sunset, a starlit sky, or a meadow in full bloom. The Clearing offers an abundance of inspiration to be interpreted realistically or abstractly, in the classroom or outdoors, on or off loom.

Class size is small and instruction personal, adapted to your abilities and interests. A variety of techniques in art weaving are introduced, most of them quite simple. With practice and Carol’s encouragement, you’ll soon have the skills and courage to experiment and put your own spin on fiber art.

Rental looms are available. The Clearing’s four-shaft Ashford table looms are on stands and have treadles for easy operation. Carol will dress rental looms in advance. Pre-dressed looms from home are welcome (24-inch or smaller, please, and not rigid heddle).

Weaving yarns may be purchased in class, with the cost based on the quantity used. Available this year are Door County wool yarns, hand-dyed with natural materials. You may also bring yarn and natural elements such as flat pebbles, pine needles and small branches. A sturdy branch or piece of driftwood can even serve as a loom, giving you a total hands-on weaving experience.

Join us for this creative week, where Clearing woods, water and meadows meet to inspire weavers to weave art!

Carol Heil has a degree in communications and a passion for fiber arts. She weaves extensively, with multiple projects always underway. Carol especially enjoys weaving wall art and rugs. In 2019, she transformed one of Mertha Fulkerson’s handwoven curtain panels from the 1950’s into the sunset artwork shown with Carol’s Creative Weaving From Nature class description. “When Life Hands You a Sunset” now hangs in the Stovewood Room, where many Clearing fiber art classes meet. Carol and her husband are year-round residents of Ellison Bay. Together, they lead weekend hikes, and Carol volunteers in The Clearing’s Bookstore, serves on The Clearing’s Board of Directors and teaches weaving and nuno felting in The Clearing’s Winter Program. Carol encourages students to experience, first and foremost, the peace and beauty of The Clearing, trusting that creativity and confidence in craft will follow.

Carol will contact students prior to class.
