Voices Long Silenced
August 2 - August 8
This year’s class will return to fiction for the first time in several years. Jeff felt challenged by the death of Toni Morrison to take up her award-winning novel Beloved with its expressive writing and captivating characters. Morrison’s recognition as an outstanding author was long-overdue. The class will devote morning discussions each day to her magnificent masterpiece. This rich narrative, rooted in slavery and its oppressive aftermath, promises to stretch the class.
Current commentary will continue to be included in the class as well. A moving interfaith forum that Jeff attended, featuring Cardinal Cupich, Rabbi Wendy Geffen and author, Muslim and interfaith leader Eboo Patel, prompted the evening discussions for this year’s class. Patel’s most recent book, Out of Many Faiths: Religious Diversity & the American Promise, is a thought-provoking reflection on empathetic citizenship and religious pluralism. Class discussions will be sparked by the essays of three constructively critical colleagues which the book also contains. Most of us have limited acquaintance with the perspectives of our Muslim neighbors and little exposure to interfaith dialogue. Hopefully, our class discussions will help us get started.
Please read both books prior to the class. Following the usual pattern of Jeff’s Clearing classes, the group will meet each morning for engaged discussion and return on three evenings for further conversations. The afternoons are free to enjoy The Clearing and the rest of Door County.
Jeff Doane has led classes at The Clearing for many years. In retirement, he is serving part-time as parish associate for older adults at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, following 27 years as pastor of the Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church. Jeff studied at Cornell University (A.B.), and at The Divinity School of The University of Chicago (A.M., D.Mn.). During retirement hours, Jeff relishes grandparenting, reading, sailing, walking and cooking with family and friends in Chicago and in Ephraim, Wisconsin.
Jeff will contact students prior to the class.
