Essentially Somatic Yoga™

Theresa Evans

August 25 - August 31

instructor imageA 2012 study indicated that 8.7% of adults in the United States, or 20.4 million people, practice yoga and that another 44.4% percent are interested in trying yoga. Navigating the “yoga culture” can be tricky, with so many styles available. Essentially Somatic Yoga™ teaches you how to move into the asanas (postures) without pushing and pulling yourself around. Rather, you start with first sensing where you have freedom of movement and where you are “stuck.” To be stuck implies that you have lost control of a part or all of the muscle and its helper muscles.

Surrounded by the beauty of The Clearing, come and explore Essentially Somatic Yoga™. You’ll begin your exploration by learning the basic somatic movements that support your ability to move the spine in all directions. These somatic movements will take you into and out of patterns that are already wired into your nervous system. These reflex patterns fire when needed in response to life! It’s when one of the reflex patterns fires continuously in response to a certain stimulus that you can become “stuck” in this pattern. An example of this is restriction of movement in the shoulder due to shrugging the shoulders up around the ears while the head juts forward when working at the computer. The muscles that support shoulder movement have now learned to stay contracted in a certain way that restricts freedom of movement. Before you can go further in exploring the weight-bearing shoulder poses that are common in Hatha Yoga, you must remember or relearn how to fully contract and fully release the shoulder muscles.

Couched in the ethical principles of yoga, the guiding principles and philosophy of essential somatics, and explorations in meditation and movement, you will begin to unlock areas of tension and explore a deeper and more peaceful way of being and moving. Theresa will guide you to practice in a mindful way that is appropriate for your body and functionality. Major emphasis will be placed on how to prevent injuries while increasing your ability to move with ease.

Mats and all yoga props will be provided. Bring your body, your beginner’s mind and a willingness to explore. This class is suitable for all levels. You must be able to lay on the floor and get up and down from the floor without difficulty. (If you have injuries or health issues that you think might prevent you from participating, please contact Theresa through The Clearing.)

Theresa Evans, RN, E-RYT 500, CCSE and Senior Essential Somatic Educator, is the owner of Stone Path Yoga Studio and Midwest Clinical Somatics near Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Currently, she spends 90% of her time travelling to India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and around the United States teaching the benefits of essential Somatic movement to other movement teachers, those interested in becoming Certified Somatic Educators and anyone who is interested in moving with more freedom and joy. Believing strongly in the mind-body connection, Theresa began her journey to yoga by first sitting quietly and establishing a meditation practice. Rather than focusing on the outward appearance of the pose, she invites her students to embrace the process and move from the inside out.

Theresa will contact students prior to class.
