Class #66

Landscape Design: Through The Eyes Of Jens Jensen

Bob Grese

August 30 - September 5

instructor imageThere’s no better place to learn about Jens Jensen’s unique approach to landscape design than at The Clearing. Bob will provide an overview of Jensen’s work throughout his career, and you’ll explore how The Clearing evolved during Jensen’s lifetime and in the years since. You’ll study the ecological conditions Jensen encountered and how he began modifying the property for his family’s retreat and later as the school. You’ll also explore sites in Door County that may have shaped Jensen’s thinking or that Jensen influenced. Finally, you’ll learn how to apply principles of Jensen’s design work in creating sustainable landscapes today.
Please bring the following supplies for this class: sketchbook (approximately 9-inch x 12-inch), colored pencils, drawing pencil(s) or pen(s) and gardening gloves. If you want to develop ideas for your own home landscapes, feel free to bring photographs or plans of your property.
Bob Grese is a recently retired professor of landscape architecture in the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan and formerly the Director of the University’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor. He is a strong advocate of ecologically-based design and ecological restoration. Bob has researched the work of early landscape architects, such as Jens Jensen and O. C. Simonds, who were known for their “prairie style” of landscape gardening and design. He is the author of Jens Jensen: Maker of Natural Parks and Gardens and wrote the introductory essay for the republishing of O. C. Simonds’s book, Landscape Gardening. Bob’s book, The Native Landscape Reader, contains writings by Jensen, Simonds and many of their contemporaries.

Bob will contact students prior to class.
