Class #66

Creative Weaving

Carol Heil

September 8 - September 14

instructor imageThis weaving class brings novice and experienced weavers together to create handwoven art forms. On looms that are pre-warped, beginners are introduced to weaving basics through simple exercises. Returning and experienced weavers may join in to refresh skills or work more independently, with instructor oversight.

In a supportive, small class environment, you will learn, share and “get creative” with freestyle, pattern, and off-loom weaving. Carol will discuss design elements and offer prompts to spark your imagination. You are encouraged to experiment, break “rules,” take breaks, and take nature walks. The colors, shapes and textures you see may weave their way into a runner, wall hanging or handwoven sculpture.

Optional evening activities include open studio weaving, paper bead-making and felt embellishments. Frame looms are available for weaving on your own, by the water or while watching a sunset. Tools for shaping textiles into three-dimensional forms are on hand, as well as a sewing machine and accessories. (Weavers who want to make art wear should be able to sew with minimal help.)

You may bring a pre-dressed loom from home (24-inch or smaller, please) or request a rental loom warped in advance. Clearing looms are beautiful 4-shaft Ashford looms on stands with treadles. Carol has weaving yarns available for purchase in class, or you may bring materials, including yarn, fabric, beads and more. Think creatively. Paper, plastic bags, apparel and old linens can be repurposed (eco-weaving!)—found objects can be incorporated into art forms.

Carol invites you to join her for this fun, creative week, where Clearing woods, water and meadows meet to inspire weavers to weave art!

Carol Heil has a degree in communications and a passion for fiber arts. She weaves extensively, with multiple projects always underway. Carol especially enjoys weaving wall art and rugs and making handmade paper sculptures. She loves The Clearing, its mission and its traditions. Carol and her husband are year-round residents of Ellison Bay. Together, they lead weekend hikes, and Carol volunteers in The Clearing’s Bookstore, serves on The Clearing’s Board of Directors, and teaches weaving and nuno felting in The Clearing’s Winter Program. Carol encourages students to experience, first and foremost, the peace and beauty of The Clearing, trusting that creativity and confidence in craft will follow.

Carol will contact students prior to class.
