Class #70

Writing Your Revised Life

Marty McConnell

September 15 - September 21

instructor imageThis weeklong poetry-focused writing intensive will explore texts that will take you deeper into yourself and from there, further out into the world with a keener understanding of your place in it. Each day will focus on a topic such as power and fear, loneliness and belonging, origin and lineage, among others—you’ll read and discuss exemplary poems and generate new writing of your own through fun, interactive prompts that draw on your life experiences and the rich setting of The Clearing. The class will focus on poetry, but define it broadly to include lyric essays, prose poems and hybrid forms.

Whether you’re an advanced writer looking to deepen your craft or just interested in exploring ways to express yourself and imagine a life revision in language, there’s space for you here. You’ll walk away at the end of the week with vital new writing of your own, as well as a reading list for further exploration. Bring your preferred writing tools (notebook, laptop, etc.) and a willing spirit.

Marty McConnell lives in Chicago, where she runs Vox Ferus, an organization dedicated to empowering and energizing individuals and communities through the written and spoken word. A master of fine art graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, she is widely published in journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry, Mid-American Review, Gulf Coast, Indiana Review and Crab Orchard, among others. Her second poetry collection, “when they say you can’t go home again, what they mean is you were never there,” won the Michael Waters Poetry Prize from Southern Indiana University Press. Her first nonfiction book, Gathering Voices: Creating a Community-Based Poetry Workshop, was published in 2018 on YesYes Books. Her first full-length collection, “wine for a shotgun,” received the Silver Medal in the Independent Publishers Awards and was a finalist for both the Audre Lorde Award and the Lambda Literary Awards. A former artist-in-residence at Hedgebrook in Seattle, Washington, Marty performs and leads workshops at schools, conferences and festivals around the country.
