Watercolor For Beginners & Beyond
May 19 - May 25
This class focuses on the basics of watercolor for those who are new to the medium, along with those painters who are looking to “brush up” on watercolor fundamentals. Some knowledge of basic drawing is assumed.
In this class, you’ll explore color theory and handling the elusive medium of watercolor. You’ll learn which supplies give you the best results. Preparation for painting will be covered, including value studies and tips for good composition. Watercolor techniques, including wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet, glazing and dry brush will be explained. You’ll learn how to preserve your whites and lights through the use of negative painting and how to avoid “muddy paintings.” Chris will share tips and tricks, and there will be plenty of opportunity for experimentation.
This will be a fun, relaxed, process-oriented class. More advanced students are invited to use the week as studio time with instructor critique and are encouraged to watch the demonstrations that interest them. A more challenging option will be offered for each painting demonstration for those students with more experience.
Chris Sommerfelt has been painting in watercolor for over 25 years, but her passion for art began in childhood. She graduated from college with a degree in commercial art and worked as a graphic designer for over 30 years, retiring in 2017 to devote more time to painting. In addition to teaching at The Clearing, Chris teaches watercolor classes in her community, tutors privately and is the mentor for Wauwatosa Artists Workshop. She has exhibited her work in solo shows, galleries and juried exhibits statewide where she has been fortunate to be an award winner. Chris’s paintings can be found in private and corporate collections. Nature is Chris’s favorite subject matter because she never ceases to be moved by the beauty of creation. Much of Chris’s work is painted from subject matter found at and near The Clearing. It is her hope that the students joining her will learn to love watercolor and The Clearing as much as she does.
A supply list will be sent prior to class and is available online.
