Paper Arts: Marbling, Bookbinding & Cartonnage
November 7 - November 13, 2021
The world of paper arts is exploding with creativity and new ways to expand upon tradition. You will begin the week by creating beautiful papers, using paste paper and marbling techniques with acrylic paints, carrageenan and traditional marbling tools, along with some modern innovations, as well as marbling on cotton and silk. Then you will use your papers to create handmade books, boxes and journals, using book board, mat board, archival glues, Tyvek, embellishments and hand-screened papers from around the world.
During class, you will learn traditional cartonnage practices, as well as several bookbinding techniques. There will be plenty of time to practice and create your own boxes and books.
Bring a large cutting mat, large and small scissors, a utility knife, an apron, rubber gloves (optional), a roll of paper towels, sharp pencils, an old bath towel, a bone folder and a box of unscented baby wipes. If you do not already own any of these supplies, contact Nancy. She can bring extras for you to use. And feel free to bring any of your own treasured papers, beads or other embellishments. If you have a small paper trimmer, iron or blow-dryer, you might want to bring them as well.
Nancy Akerly is a lifelong origamist, folk painter and paper artist, concentrating for the past 13-plus years on creating boxes, binding books and making marbled papers. She is passionate about sharing her skill and knowledge with others, inspiring them to expand their own creativity. Nancy lives in Sister Bay, Wisconsin with her musician/storyteller husband, Lloyd Michalsen, and created her paper arts business, Liberty Grove Paper Arts, after 40 years as a public school teacher. She teaches and shows her work at numerous venues throughout the Midwest.
Nancy will contact students prior to class.
