2022 Summer Program

Class #10

Spring Birds Of Northern Woods & Waters

Nancy Stevenson & Gerry Janz

May 15 - May 21, 2022

instructor imageExperience the freshness and vitality of a spring week in the field, when birds are in full voice and colorful plumage and the great northward migration quickens the heart. Enjoy the rich diversity of Door County's bird life as you explore a wide variety of habitats, from woodland to lakeshore, cattail marsh to farm field and boreal forest to limestone bluff.

"Early bird" walks before breakfast will emphasize the beauty and function of song. Morning and afternoon field trips will sample many of Door County's best birding areas. Evening programs may include discussions of daily sightings, topics of special interest, a “night sounds” walk and informal talks around the campfire. Most class time will be spent outdoors, so bring clothes for warm or cold and wet or dry conditions, sturdy footwear and binoculars. Field guides, a lightweight daypack, a water bottle and a flashlight will also be helpful. There will be considerable walking but no strenuous hiking.

Nancy Stevenson is a naturalist with a lifelong love of birds. She is the former Director of Children’s Programs and Summer Naturalist at Jordan Park Nature Center in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She has conducted breeding bird surveys in central Wisconsin for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for over 25 years, has surveyed breeding birds on Isle Royale National Park for the U.S. Forest Service and has assisted with private research on nesting birds and vegetation in the Quetico-Superior Wilderness. Nancy studied biology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has taught Elderhostel classes in birding and nature study and was a licensed bird bander for 30 years. She formerly owned and operated the Birdhouse, a bed and breakfast for birders, at her rural home near Stevens Point. Nancy has been an instructor at The Clearing for many years.

Gerry Janz is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, with degrees in biology and outdoor education. He has a lifelong passion for birds and birding and leads field trips for central Wisconsin's Aldo Leopold Audubon Society and the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology.
