Class #100

Off The Beaten Path: Exploring Door County's Natural Treasures

Terrie Cooper & Mike Schneider

October 2 - October 8, 2022

instructor imageSpend an autumn week exploring and enjoying Door County’s most important asset: its natural beauty. You’ll explore well-known places, including Toft Point and Ellison Bluff County Park, along with some hidden treasures, including several Door County Land Trust sites. The class will also spend a day on Washington Island visiting Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources State Natural Areas and Land Trust sites.

Terrie and Mike will lead hikes in a variety of habitats, including hardwood forests, boreal forests, wetlands, beaches and along the Niagara Escarpment. You’ll learn about plants, animals and other creatures that call Door County home, and gain a new appreciation for the unique geology and natural history that make Door County so interesting, diverse and beautiful. There will be moderate hiking—up to five miles total each day. Some hikes include areas of uneven or difficult terrain, so good hiking shoes or boots are a must. Rain gear is also helpful, since the class will be outdoors most of the time, rain or shine. A daypack, water bottle, walking stick and binoculars will come in handy too.
Terrie Cooper is the Community Conservation Director for the Door County Land Trust and had the good fortune of growing up in Ellison Bay. After working for 16 years as a naturalist and environmental educator at nature centers throughout Wisconsin, she had the opportunity, in 1999, to return home to Door County to help protect, to-date, over 8,000 acres of land with the Land Trust. Terrie holds a master’s degree in environmental education/natural resources management and loves kayaking, wilderness travel, birding and biking.
Mike Schneider is a central Wisconsin native and has lived in Door County since 1999. He has two degrees in horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and especially loves Wisconsin’s native plants. Mike and his wife, Cindy, live near Ellison Bay, where he gardens, cares for his five-acre “Door County meadow,” feeds the birds, works on stained glass and enjoys Door County’s unique brand of peace and beauty. Mike is the Executive Director of The Clearing.

Additional Fee: There will be a fee of approximately $20 per person to get all members of the class and two or three vehicles to Washington Island on the ferry. This fee will be collected by The Clearing during the week of class.
