2022 Summer Program

Class #103

The Art Of Nature & Outdoor Photography

Hank Erdmann

October 9 - October 15, 2022

instructor imageLearn the art of photographing the natural world, concentrating on the process of “seeing” and turning vision into an image.

Photography has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. As a result, the way photography is taught has evolved over that time. Hank’s classes now spend more time in the field than in the classroom.

This class is open to all ability levels. You’ll learn how to make fine images through location shooting sessions, slide lectures, equipment and technique demonstrations, critiques and hands-on work in the field. Advanced photographers will find plenty of challenges and beginners will find new ways of looking at nature and making images.

All instruction is designed for DSLR cameras. Phone cameras are not sufficient for this class. Bring your camera, camera manual, lens(es), and tripod. A laptop with some image processing software is really a necessity to process your images for critique and instruction. The class will cover exposure, camera settings and features, composition, light characteristics, and putting feeling and emotion into your work. Special attention will be given to photographing Door County's fall color, rural character and shorelines. Photographic sites will include The Clearing, parks, natural areas and scenic roadsides. The class will rise early on one morning to photograph the sunrise.

Hank Erdmann is a professional photographer and writer from Will County, Illinois. He has photographed throughout North America, with the Midwest being his main area of interest. A love of the maritime history of the Great Lakes kindles a special interest in the shorelines, islands and natural areas of Lakes Michigan and Superior. Hank teaches workshops and guides photography tours across the country. Hank's photographs and articles have been published by BrownTrout, Door County Magazine, Chicago Wilderness, National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, Sierra Club and Wisconsin Trails. Hank is currently a Board Member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association).
