2022 Summer Program
A Box Of Wonders: Paper Arts & Journaling
Nancy Akerly & Mary Dykstra
May 15 - May 21, 2022
Much of what we know about the natural world came from collectors centuries ago who kept their discoveries in “cabinets of curiosities.” They collected fossils, shells, plants, seeds, insects, and leaves—really any objects that captured their interest and that they considered mysterious or a thing of wonder. In this class, you’ll make your own beautiful “box of wonders” with niches, drawers and shelves made from bookboard and covered with marbled, lokta, and chiyogami papers.
You’ll begin your collection by bringing treasures from home, then adding to your collection during the week as you explore, observe and describe the wonders outside your Clearing classroom—objects that excite your imagination and instill a sense of wonder.
Journaling will be guided in a variety of ways—in a traditional notebook and written within scrolls, small books and folded booklets you can tuck into your box of wonders as you explore and create.
Please bring a cutting mat, scissors, utility knife, bone folder, colored pencils or markers, a magnifying glass, binoculars (optional) and a special pen or writing tool.
Come for a week of wonder while exploring The Clearing with Mary, a wordsmith, birder, and whimsical explorer of the natural world, and Nancy, a book binder, box maker and artistic explorer of everything else!
Mary Dykstra started recording her observations of the natural world as a fourth-grade member of the Audubon Junior Club and has been doing so ever since. A lifelong birder and longtime freelance writer, her work has been featured in Birders World and Bird Watcher’s Digest. She has taught in a wide variety of settings, including museums and nature centers. Mary lives in the Madison area where she is a docent at the Chazen Museum of Art and a volunteer naturalist for the International Crane Foundation.
Nancy Akerly, a resident of Sister Bay, is an educator, origamist, folk painter and paper artist, with a concentration on book binding, box making and marbling papers. Her business, Liberty Grove Paper Arts, was created after 40 years as a public school teacher. She teaches online classes for San Diego Book Arts and Liberty Grove Paper Arts, and at numerous venues throughout the United States.
Nancy and Mary will contact students prior to class.
