Basket Making & Gourd Art

Denise Arzberger & Annelies Gebert

July 10 - July 16, 2022

instructor imageSpend a relaxing and creative week making unique baskets and gourd art. This class, suitable for all experience levels, is designed to explore fun and functional projects. Days will alternate between weaving two baskets and completing a variety of gourd projects, including a gourd that incorporates weaving techniques.

Denise will introduce you to basic basket making techniques by weaving two different styles of baskets: a generously-sized market basket and a round muffin basket. Each will be made using rattan reed with your choice of colors for accent. You’ll learn the basics of laying out a base, shaping the sides and finishing the rims. The finished size of the market basket is approximately 15 inches long by 10 inches wide by 7 inches high. The finished size of the muffin basket is approximately 10 inches in diameter by 4 inches high.

Annelies will guide you through a variety of gourd projects, starting with three mini gourds that will each teach different coloring techniques. You will be able to finish these mini gourds by weaving the rims in different natural materials. A larger gourd project will combine basket making and gourd art techniques in your own unique design. Gourds used will be cleaned and prepared, giving you the opportunity to incorporate reed, seagrass, natural fibers and embellishments to express your personal tastes. Gourd preparation, cleaning and dyeing processes will be discussed.

Creativity, relaxation and fun are the emphasis for the week!

Please bring the following materials with you: old towel, strong scissors or pruning clippers, several clip clothespins, pail or dish pan, small flathead screwdriver, pencil and a flexible tape measure.

Denise Arzberger began weaving in 1989 and has not stopped. Appreciating baskets for their function as well as their beauty, Denise designs baskets far beyond the imagination. Using everything from antlers to sea-grass, her designs add a creative and modern twist to the otherwise traditional, functional basket. Denise has taught at a variety of basketry conventions, and allows her students to learn at their own pace, making for a laid-back environment in a variety of class settings.

Annelies Gebert has been using nature as an influence for her gourd artistry since 1997. Using basket-making techniques learned at a convention, she utilizes a wide variety of natural fibers to create unique gourd pieces. The three-dimensional surface, exclusive shapes and various textures of the gourds take her imagination to new levels. Annelies uses a hands-on teaching approach, allowing her students to get the most out of their studio time.

Denise and Annelies will contact students prior to class.
