2022 Summer Program

Class #52

Soft Pastel Landscape Adventure

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

July 17 - July 23, 2022

instructor imageImmerse yourself in color and the natural world! The soft pastel medium is versatile, immediate and expressive, and it allows you to combine the best of drawing and painting. This class is for anyone interested in learning about soft pastel for the first time, as well as more experienced artists who want to gain a greater understanding of the medium and its capabilities while cultivating artistic growth. The class will take an in-depth look at the variety of papers, application styles and techniques available to the pastel artist.

In addition to technical skill development, intermediate and advanced students will be encouraged to consider content, theme or emotion in their landscape paintings and should come prepared with personal goals for the week. Working from both photographic references in the studio and directly from life—en plein air—you will complete thought-provoking exercises that provide greater understanding of the medium and its capabilities. You will have plenty of quiet time to explore your own ideas as well. Kay specializes in adapting to each participant’s personality and skill level and provides plenty of positive, encouraging one-on-one interaction, as well as frequent demonstrations. Useful handouts, specific pastel papers for the exercises and other materials will be provided.

Kay Brathol-Hostvet is an upbeat, enthusiastic instructor bringing a wealth of experiences to the classroom.
