The Writers' Workshop: Girls Who Wore Black – Women Writers of the Beat Generation

Albert DeGenova

July 31 - August 6, 2022

instructor imageThis class is taught in the tradition of Norbert Blei, who taught at The Clearing for over 40 years. It’s a week that includes an exploration of a specific subject and/or approach to writing and writing prompts.

Choose one of two class sections: Girls Who Wore Black—Women Writers of The Beat Generation (afternoons) or The Poetry Workshop (mornings).

Girls Who Wore Black – Women Writers of the Beat Generation: This class will explore how writers place their personal experiences within the context of a specific history to complete, expand or add perspective to that history. Class discussion will focus on women writers of the Beat movement who used memoir to position themselves in a cultural moment in which history had previously neglected (or overlooked) their roles and contributions. The class will also explore selected creative work of Beat women writers. Core reading, handouts and discussion will be augmented by in-class and homework writing prompts. All that is necessary is a desire to write!

The core required reading for Women Writers of the Beat Generation is: How I Became Hettie Jones by Hettie Jones and Minor Characters by Joyce Johnson. Optional reading: Dinners and Nightmares by Diane DiPrima and Recollections of My Life as A Woman, also by Diane DiPrima.

Albert DeGenova began his studies with Norbert Blei at The Clearing in 1996. Albert holds a master of fine art degree in writing from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. He is also a blues saxophonist and one-time contributing editor to Down Beat magazine.
