2022 Summer Program
Fall Rambles: Bird Migration & More
Nancy Stevenson & Gerry Janz
September 11 - September 17, 2022
Fall birding can be a challenge for beginning and seasoned birders alike. Many birds have exchanged the bright plumage of spring for the more subdued colors of fall and winter. Young of the year in juvenile plumage are drabber still, and most birds have stopped singing. Migration has already begun for some species; others rest and feed in preparation for the arduous journey and the rigors of winter.
This class will focus on birds in fall plumage, identification aids, confusing molts, changes in behavior and the wonder of migration. The class will visit a variety of habitats on daily walks, surrounded by the beauty of early autumn. While looking for birds, other migrants may be found as well, and many signs of the changing season.
If weather permits, there may be an evening for night sounds and star-gazing in the meadow.
As most class time will be outside, bring clothes for warm or cold, wet or dry weather, sturdy footwear and binoculars. There will be considerable walking bur no strenuous hiking. Field guides, a water bottle and a light day pack will also be helpful.
Come for a refreshing week of exploration, discovery and leisurely fall birding.
