Class #91

Small Space, Big Ideas: Painting In Acrylic

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

September 18 - September 24, 2022

instructor imageNo studio or work space available to you? Are you constricted to working on projects on your kitchen table or office desk? No problem—don’t let your limited space limit your creativity! Painting on small surfaces using just a few brushes and tubes of acrylic, from a small well-organized palette, you'll create little paintings with big impact! Acrylic is a perfect “use and put away” medium because it dries quickly, has little odor, and cleans up with water. The materials for this class should all fit in a small-medium tote or large canvas bag.

Acrylic is versatile because it dries quickly, allowing you to do multiple layers or to make drastic changes. It is forgiving of beginners’ mistakes—the dry paint can be covered up again or sponged off with water if still wet. You'll learn to mix colors and explore the various acrylic mediums, practice basic painting techniques and study design concepts and color theory through several useful exercises, all within small formats, anywhere from four to 12 inches. After the initial exercises, you will work in the style of your choice—representational or abstract—on your own canvases or panels. Experienced painters will be challenged to explore content and meaning—big ideas—on their small surfaces. Kay will give multiple instructor demonstrations throughout the week to help inspire you.

Kay Brathol-Hostvet is an upbeat, enthusiastic instructor bringing a wealth of experiences to the classroom. She has over 30 years of experience as an exhibiting artist, and has been teaching workshops in drawing, design, pastel, acrylic painting and professional development for many years. Her works are in corporate and private collections around the Midwest. Her pastel paintings have been featured in The Pastel Journal and the Dane Arts (Dane County, Wisconsin) annual poster and calendar, and her acrylic paintings are included in North Light Books’ AcrylicWorks 2: Radical Breakthroughs. She works from her home studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and is represented by Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, Abel Contemporary Gallery in Stoughton, Wisconsin and Riverwood Art and Frame in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
