Book in a Box: Cartonnage & Bookbinding
September 9 & 10 | 9 - 4
Clamshell Boxes are the traditional boxes that protect books. We will make a clamshell box with a magnetic closure the first day and create a coordinating Coptic bound book that fits snugly inside the box the second day - a great way to store a journal, a family treasury of memories or recipes, a photo album or family history. We will use strong and beautiful Japanese handmade papers and linen bookcloth with waxed linen thread. Create an heirloom as you sharpen your cartonnage and bookbinding skills. Please bring: a bone folder, unscented baby wipes, scissors, a mechanical pencil and a self-healing cutting mat. Nancy have extras of all of these and will be glad to share.
Nancy Akerly is a Door County paper artist, working with century’s old marbling and bookbinding techniques to create original boxes and hand bound books and journals. She has taught classes and workshops throughout Door County, in Germany and Taiwan, incorporating the simple elegance of paper folding in her work.
