History
The merchant, Henry Babson, helped finance the Schoolhouse in 1938, during the Depression. Clarence Hedeen was the builder, and red oak lumber was brought over the ice from Washington Island. Where the stone was quarried, Jensen created a sunken garden. In 1981 a severe fire raised financial questions which led to fundraising, reorganization and independence for The Clearing in 1988.
Today
The Schoolhouse houses two of The Clearing’s most used classrooms. The Schoolhouse main studio is a large open space for students to work. The Weaving room is an intimate space for smaller classes.
