Class Details
In this class you will make food-related wooden items to use every day. The best art are items we can use in our daily activities. The class is appropriate for beginners through experienced woodturners. Projects will include spoons and spatulas, scoops, salad tongs, bottle stoppers, ice cream scoops, rolling pins and more. Students will be able to move at their own pace with guidance as needed. There will be many demonstrations of turning techniques as well as projects. Expect to bring home some usable stuff. You may bring your own turning tools if you have them, but all tools will be provided. Please bring your own face shield and dust mask.
Tom Hurst started his career in agriculture and forestry after growing up on small dairy farm. He spent 35 years teaching agriculture, environmental sciences and woodworking at levels from elementary to graduate students. He has helped to design and build multiple community shops. Making things from trees was always a presence, the home shop has been an integral part of life since 1986. His woodworking has focused on the beauty and utility of everyday items. Food related items, furniture including chairs, and small watercraft. He is active in woodworking guilds in Michigan, teaches furniture design in an architecture program and various programs around southwest Michigan. His Mantra: “Let’s go make some stuff”
