Class Details
Little blocks of brilliantly-colored polymer clay are an invitation to both beginners and those with some experience to explore the clay’s potential. We will mix, mold, and build complex canes often with some surprising results. There is always more to discover. Instruction on basic techniques such as the Skinner Blend will be balanced with opportunities to apply the techniques. All tools and materials will be provided, but if you have pasta roller dedicated to polymer clay, please bring it. This day will be packed with enough instruction and inspiration to encourage even the most “apprehensive artist” to relax and enjoy the medium. Lynne will contact students prior to class.
Lynne Bergschultz is an illustrator, designer and educator with a passion for polymer clay. She has produced one-of-a-kind jewelry, countless original buttons and shawl pins, and is currently working on creating polymer collages. Her work has been published in national craft magazines and is sold in galleries, shops (including The Clearing’s Bookstore!) and festivals around the country. Lynne never tires of working with polymer clay and loves sharing her passion with others.

If you love fabrics and are looking for something different to do with them, this is the class for you! Tap into another side of your creativity with textile artist Susan Hoffmann. You will create your own 16″x20″ version of Susan’s original artwork, using fabric and scissors as your canvas and paintbrush. You will receive a kit which includes a photo of the project, all the fabrics you need, as well as the adhesive product. In addition, you will be able to use Susan’s art supplies to complete your project in class. Afterward, you can decide to quilt or frame your piece using Susan’s instructions. A supply list will be sent and is available at www.theclearing.org.
Susan Hoffmann began exploring fiber arts approximately 20 years ago. Working within a very broad definition of fiber, she learned many different techniques through a variety of classes. She was introduced to a landscape quilting technique in 2008. During that class she realized her piece looked more like a watercolor painting than a quilt and deserved a frame instead of the quilting needle! She has become truly passionate about creating her unique kind of textile art and continues to perfect the design and construction processes in her home studio in Baileys Harbor, WI.

Come along as we explore the unique nature of alcohol inks! Let your creativity grow as you enjoy the process. All levels are encouraged and welcome. Alcohol inks are brightly colored, acid-free, dye-based paints that create free flowing textures and design. They are loose, colorful, and will amaze you in their exciting movement across the canvases. This class will explore and play with a variety of techniques of painting alcohol ink on several different surfaces. While you create your own paintings, Linda and Yvonne will give helpful suggestions and personal attention to each student. After completion, the artwork will be given a series of protective sprays and UV archival protection to ensure longevity. Come join us to create and explore! A supply list will be sent and is available at www.theclearing.org.

Class Details
This course is directed toward the beginning and intermediate student and will serve that student to further cultivate a drawing practice. It will not be about technique, style, or the idiosyncratic use of drawing materials. Rather, this course will focus on a high level of seeing, which enables the requisite understanding that is needed to accomplish insightful and expressive draftsmanship. This one-day intensive course will encourage the loosening of the shackles of “accuracy” which will begin to open the possibility to a personal point of view. Each student is required to bring two (2) objects that they find inspirational and personal to themselves. Each of these objects should be a minimum of 6″ in height. Drawing paper and drawing implements will be provided.
Craig Blietz is a graduate of the University of Denver, Harrington College of Design, and the School of Representational Art. He is a full-time artist and has had 24 solo exhibitions. He is recognized for his work representing American rural landscape and pastoral life. Craig has had twenty-three solo exhibitions and has exhibited widely in museums in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. He lives and works in northeast Wisconsin.

Class Details
Boro is an old Japanese mending technique which was used to keep work clothing and domestic fabric items useful for generations. Adopted by the upper-class, it became known as sashiko. In class we will work on five “pages” of a small book and fill each page with different sample types of mends using scrap fabrics and a variety of stitches. The sample book may be completed using a book binding stitch. Or students have the option of making four (4) panels for a Kumbukuro (Rice Bag), which they can then take home to sew with a provided pattern and sewing machine. Please bring a basic sewing kit of fabric scissors and thread scissors, needle threader, thimble if desired, reading glasses if needed, pin cushion or holder and task light if needed.
Kipp Inglis is a lifelong stitcher. She learned to sew at a very early age to clothe her dolls. A needle and thread have been in her fingers ever since. Sewing has always been solace and a means to express some spirituality. Kipp studied costume and clothing design in college, learned to weave shortly after, and has found a way to include fiber related art as a constant in her life. While she concentrates a lot of her current work on the use of botanical dyes on fibers, she still utilizes stitching, both classical and experimental, in much of her work and especially in the stitched shibori and indigo dyed pieces that are so popular. Kipp exhibits at primarily local fine craft shows with occasional gallery exhibitions and teaches in and around Wisconsin.

We will begin each day with a short yoga stretch allowing us to relax and open up to new directions in watercolor. Batik is a term that refers to using wax as a resist, and it is really all about values. During the first day we will go over materials and show how to draw on the paper, find values, and start to wax. We will start on a small piece and go step by step through each process. Barbara encourages students to use their own references, however, she also has many drawings that can be used. The second day is a day for working the process to see all the options that can be incorporated into a piece. When finished with a piece, it no longer feels like paper it’s more like material. Barbara will finish the day by suggesting ways to frame your work. A supply list will be sent prior to class.
Barbara Mathews has taught for over 20 years in the US and about 18 years abroad with workshops in Ireland, Hawaii, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Croatia, Turkey and many locations in the Caribbean. She has also taught for UW-Madison Continuing Education studies, and for many different art associations. Barbara has won the outstanding achievement in Art Education, Life of an Artist Award – 2019, United Arts Alliance, Hall of Fame. While being mostly self-taught, she has also taken many workshops from top people in the field.

Get introduced to the world of fungi, and learn the skills needed to identify wild mushrooms with Door County’s Charlotte Lukes. We will briefly go over fungal biology and ecology, and then focus on how to differentiate the major groups of mushroom-forming fungi. We will then head out on The Clearing property to observe fungi in their natural habitat, learn how to properly collect fungi for identification, and how to identify those fungi using field guides. It is hoped that you will gain a greater understanding of mushroom diversity and the skills needed to identify mushrooms on your own. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and long pants. Bring your favorite mushroom guidebook, notebook, side bag, pen, ten-power hand magnifier (if you have one) and be prepared for hiking on some rocky trails, plus rain gear for inclement weather, if needed.
Charlotte Lukes photographed her first mushroom in 1971 and has explored most of Door County in search of new species ever since. Charlotte has been collecting, studying, and photographing wild mushrooms for more than 40 years. She has identified nearly 600 species in the county, which Charlotte has described and illustrated on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Cofrin Center for Biodiversity website: www.uwgb.edu/biodiversity/resources/mushrooms

In this class, you will create two original paintings. We will be working on both paintings at the same time. One will be on canvas based on a photo reference for inspiration and one on paper created intuitively. We will cover color, composition, value, and a bit of art history. We may venture outside to explore the grounds, discussing all the color shades, if time and weather allow. Carmen will bring all supplies and inspiration photos. This will be a very fun class! A pre-class letter will be sent by the instructor prior to class.
Carmen Duran is a painter, mixed media artist and teacher. She took all the advanced art classes she could through college at UW-Green Bay pursuing her degree. She later found photography and enjoyed that for quite a long time. She kept seeing her photographs of Midwest landscapes and flower gardens as paintings. She then replaced her photography gear with painting supplies. Her art is personal, emotional and a reflection of her experiences. Each painting speaks to a different story and incorporates a variety of mediums both traditional and non-traditional. Carmen is exhibiting in four galleries across Wisconsin steadily and many of original works can be seen in clinics and hospitals in Wisconsin. Part of the proceeds of Carmen’s art sales are donated to a carefully selected program benefiting children’s cancer awareness and education.

Women deal with a myriad of demands at every stage of life, and quite often our good intentions for self-care don’t reach the top of the “to do” list. We can get closer to honoring our authentic self and well-being on all levels—-physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual—-if we do the inner work. Join Beth and Susan as we explore simple journaling techniques, create vision boards and personal plans, and engage in mindfulness practices of breath work, gentle movements, guided relaxation, and an integrative outdoor labyrinth walk. Come with curiosity and the desire to reprioritize what matters in your life. Leave with a range of daily practices to sustain you. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a journal or notebook, yoga mat, blanket, pillow, indoor slippers/shoes, and sturdy footwear for an outdoor walk. A pre-class letter will be sent.

Put away your point-and-shoot camera and pull out your iPhone to create wonderful images using your phone’s camera and photo apps. We will start with photography basics such as exposure, composition, and focus and move on to an exploration of some of the best apps, and low-cost tools for shooting, editing and creative expression. Half days will be spent in the field taking photos with our phones and learning tips and techniques to capture better images. The second half of each day will be in the classroom, editing our photos on our phone or tablet utilizing a number of photo apps. Karen will demonstrate the apps she uses and work with you to enhance your images. This hands-on workshop is for students of all levels. Although the iPhone will be used for demonstrations, many of the apps and techniques also work well with an Android phone. Karen will contact students prior to class.

Kumiko is an ancient form of Japanese woodworking that produces intricate lattices without the use of nails or glue. The wood is carefully chiseled to exact, interlocking angles, and then precisely fit together. Used as doors, walls, dividers, boxes, decoration, wall art, lights, or whatever your imagination can think up! You will create a full, 12”x12” Kumiko piece selected from one of several traditional patterns. Day one will be spent learning about different Kumiko patterns, how they work, and making your grids for your own Kumiko. Day two will be spent working with pre-cut wood strips and angled jigs, learning how to chisel pieces to fit together into the pattern. Those who wish to can also use hand-dyeing techniques to give their piece additional personality or back it with fabric. The goal of the course is to give you the knowledge to make many Kumiko patterns and allow you to practice by making one of several simple patterns.
Philip Ankeny is a self-taught carpenter, custom woodworker, and artist who has been making things since childhood. Growing up on a farm in the Appalachian foothills of Pennsylvania, making things work with what you had was the norm — the first projects he can remember were holding the light for his dad while fixing any number of things around the farm. He has since found his place doing high-end woodworking, residential remodeling, and creating art, most recently focused on high-end woodworking and furniture making.

Drawing is one of the most elemental forms of communication throughout human culture, and the foundation for all of the visual arts. This fun, process-oriented workshop with artist Kay Brathol-Hostvet is for everyone—from beginners to advanced students with an emphasis on FUN! Go beyond traditional drawing, expand skills and creativity, and regain the delight we had as children when drawing. Using nature-inspired subjects and ideas, you’ll explore expressive mark-making, exaggeration, distortion, co-operative drawing, and the use of non-traditional drawing tools we will find in nature. We will work both intuitively and cerebrally so come with an open mind. Our drawings will be about exploration and experimentation—the processes we employ—rather than focusing on finished products. A supply will be sent prior to class and is available online at www.theclearing.org.
Kay Brathol-Hostvet is an enthusiastic instructor bringing a wealth of experiences to the classroom. Kay is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and has a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, with concentrations in drawing and painting. The Chinese Thread Book is a unique construction: part book, part box, and part origami. Called the Xian Zhen Bao (XZB) in Southwestern China, they were used to hold snippets of cloth, needles, and other treasures. The interior was paper, full of hidden compartments and secret niches. The outside was often cloth of some kind. They were highly and individually decorated. Nancy will share the basic construction and supply beautiful handmade papers for you to use to create your XZB – and we will explore a few of the unlimited opportunities for creativity and embellishment. Learn specific techniques to “loosen up” and give your work more luminosity and impact with Jane’s gentle encouragement to stretch your skills, using bigger brushes and clean bold color. On Day 1 we’ll loosen up our brushwork and mix richer color in a series of step-by-step exercises; design and value concepts will be introduced. On Day 2 we’ll break down the steps in creating an expressive painting from a photo image you love. This is NOT about how to duplicate every detail in a photo “as is,” but how to express it as “your own” with techniques such as cropping, composition, design, and value, all done in a loose style. Learn which photos present the best “raw material” to paint from (and which don’t!). Photo references will be supplied if you don’t have your own. One-on-one guidance toward your own creative goals is a key to Jane’s supportive approach. Some experience with watercolor is encouraged. Absolute beginners, please contact the Jane at barnardstudio@yahoo.com prior to registering. A supply list will be sent prior to class and is available at www.theclearing.org.
