Class Details
This class will introduce you to Scandinavian flat-plane figure carving. This simple but elegant style of carving relies on creating large, broad, bold cuts to create a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. Flat-plane carving details are typically abstracted and made with the fewest cuts possible. The result is a figure with lots of angles and crisp edges. No sandpaper allowed here!
The class will focus on caricature and figure carving. By combining group demonstrations and helpful one-on-one advice, Erik will lead you, step-by-step, through one (or more) of his whimsical carving designs. You will also learn about wood properties, the proper use of carving tools, how to keep your tools sharp and how to easily create fun facial details. Painting your carving is just as important as the carving itself, so you will also spend ample time during the class learning easy and effective finishing techniques.
This class does require a modest amount of dexterity and hand strength. Bring a straight edged, 1 1/2″ – 2″ carving knife and protective carving gloves. The materials fee is for wood blanks, paints and other supplies.
Erik Rinkleff learned to carve at The Clearing in 1998. He now enjoys carving a variety of subjects, including Santas, snowmen, country characters, gnomes, and wood spirits. Erik is the Creative Director of The Clearing and runs his own woodworking business, Rustic Road Studio. He has been teaching wood carving and rustic furniture classes for over 20 years.
