Registration Information

How to Register:

Class sizes are limited to the volunteer instructor’s prefered class sizes or limits on gatherings. While we do take registrations up to the date of the class start date, registration by the lottery deadline date of 4 p.m., Wednesday, December 16 (see LOTTERY below) helps to ensure you have the best chance of getting into the class(es) you want. You may register for classes by:

Online: Visit, and navigate to the Winter Program pages (found under the Classes tab at the top) for a complete listing of winter classes. Click on the class title for full class descriptions and to register.

Mail: Print the online registration form and mail, along with full payment, to The Clearing, P.O. Box 65, Ellison Bay, WI 54210.

In Person: Visit The Clearing and sign up for Winter Program classes. Please note there is a 4 person limit in the Bookstore/Giftshop.

Classes for which there are more registrations than available space will be lotteried. This means that the name of everyone registered for an overfull class will have their name placed in a “hat”. Names will be randomly drawn from the “hat” and added to that class until we arrive at the maximum number of students the instructor has set. Names that are not drawn are placed on a waiting list for that class, and will not be charged tuition until/unless they later get into the class.

To ensure you will be included in the lottery, your registration MUST be received by Wednesday, December 16 at 4 p.m. We work with each instructor to establish the maximum number of students for their class. Some instructors are able, if their class fills, to offer an extra class section, but most are not. Please understand that although we do all we can to accommodate as many students as we can in each class, some classes will fill and we have to use the lottery system for those classes.

Confirmation of Your Registration Status:

You will receive a letter or email five or six days after the December 16 lottery date or the date you registered, if later than the lottery deadline date, confirming which classes you got into and which ones you did not get into and were subsequently, automatically placed on a wait list.

Fees and Pricing:

Information on fees and pricing is listed at the end of each class description. Some classes require an additional materials, facility or shop fee. These are noted at the end of the class descriptions.

Friends of The Clearing Discount:

As with all things that are not “usual” this year, usually there would be a 10% Friends of The Clearing discount for Winter Program class tuition, but due to hardships created by the pandemic, The Clearing is unable to offer this benefit during these challenging times. Thank you for your understanding. Learn more about becoming a Friend of The Clearing.

Friends of The Clearing Life Members:

Friends of The Clearing Life Member registrations received prior to the December 16 lottery deadline are exempt from the lottery. However, if a class fills with Life Members before the lottery deadline, a separate lottery for Life Members will be held for that class. After the lottery, all registrations will be assigned to open classes on a first-come, space-available basis. If you are a Life Member, please be sure to check the Life Member box on the registration form. Learn more about becoming a Life Member of Friends of The Clearing.

Scandia Residents:

As with all things that are not “usual” this year, usually there would be discount for Winter Program tuition for classes held at Scandia, but due to hardships created by the pandemic, The Clearing is unable to offer this benefit during these challenging times. Thank you for your understanding.

Cancellation Policy:

Full refunds are available only if (1) you are unable to get into the class(es) of your choice and payment was made; The Clearing will begin processing refunds for lotteried classes the second week of January classes, or (2) if The Clearing cancels a class in cooperation with or at the request of the instructor. Additionally, in 2021 only, if you are feeling ill and you are registered for an in-person class, please stay home for the health and safety of others; you may request an optional $10 per session refund, if you feel you would like a partial refund. No other refunds will be issued.

Severe Weather:

During severe weather, view WBAY, channel 2 (this seems to be the most consistent TV source for Gibraltar school’s status) or listen to WDOR, 910 AM/93.9 FM. If Gibraltar Schools are cancelled, all Clearing class sessions for that day are cancelled. If Gibraltar Schools have a late start, morning class sessions for that day at The Clearing are cancelled, afternoon class sessions will be held and full day classes will have the same delay as Gibraltar. If in doubt, please call The Clearing at 920-854-4088. Do not call Gibraltar Schools.

If class sessions are cancelled due to severe weather, make-up sessions (if any) will be coordinated between the instructor and The Clearing.

Potluck Notes:

In order to ensure the safety of you, fellow students, instructors and staff, no Clearing Potlucks will be scheduled this year.

Helpful Things to Remember:

Keep your class listing & confirmation documents handy! It will help answer many of your questions.

Drive slowly at The Clearing. We sand the roads when conditions warrant it, but nothing helps as much as slowing down, especially on the curves! Most of the roads through The Clearing are one-way. Please follow the exit signs from the parking areas. The “spur” roads off the main campus road, are two-way so please be on the lookout for others who may be coming from the other direction. Online maps and directions are always available at, mouse over the About Us tab for a pull down menu, look for Maps & Directions and click on it.

Trails and roads at The Clearing can be uneven and rough in places. Be sure to wear appropriate winter clothing and sturdy footwear.

The Clearing takes registrations up to the start date of a class. If a class is full, wait lists are established and utilized to maximize participation in the case of someone else dropping from a class.

Buildings and Grounds:

The Clearing is a rustic, natural place. The paths around buildings are flagstone. Paths in the woods and meadows and along the escarpment cliff are bare soil or have a sawdust or wood chip surface. Rocks and tree roots are at the surface in some areas on these paths, so care should be taken when walking. Good walking shoes and a walking stick are helpful.

Although The Clearing has made many improvements with regard to making the buildings and grounds more accessible for those with physical disabilities, some people may have issues related to accessibility. Please call The Clearing to discuss any concerns you have regarding accessibility.

Admission Policy:

Students should be at least 18 years old to attend classes at The Clearing. All students are welcome at The Clearing regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality or ethnic origin.

Office and Jens Jensen Visitor Center Hours:
