Winter Registration Information

NEW in 2022: Registration is "First Come, First Served"

With The Clearing’s new registration system in place, there is no lottery procedure, as in the past. The Clearing’s new online registration system will be “first come, first served” meaning registering as early as possible helps to ensure you have the best chance of getting into the class(es) you want. Once a class is filled, you will have the option to add your name to the class wait list. Tuition and fees will not be charged until/unless the student gets into the class.

We work with each volunteer instructor to establish the maximum number of students for their class. Some instructors are able, if their class fills, to offer an extra class section, but most are not. Please understand that although we do all we can to accommodate as many students as we can in each class, some classes will fill and wait lists are generated.

Proof of Vaccination Status:

The Clearing will require proof of vaccination prior to class for everyone who registers for a 2022 Winter Program class. Submission of documents can be submitted through The Clearing’s new online registration system when you register, emailed to, provided in-person at The Clearing Jensen Center or mailed via USPS. View our Winter Program COVID Response page for complete details.

How to Register:

Class sizes are limited to the volunteer instructor’s preferred class sizes or limits on gatherings. While we do take registrations up to the date of the class start date, registering as early as possible helps to ensure you have the best chance of getting into the class(es) you want. You may register for classes by:

Online: (preferred method) Visit, and navigate to the Winter Program pages (found under the Classes tab at the top) for a complete listing of winter classes. Click on the class title for full class descriptions and to register.

NEW IN 2021: Beginning in 2021, guests will need to create a Clearing User Account prior to registering. Your account is designed to give you instant access to class information, faster methods of payment and streamlined registration. Once created, you will be able to register for classes, make donations, manage memberships and edit your contact information.

Mail: Print the online registration form and mail, along with full payment, to The Clearing, P.O. Box 65, Ellison Bay, WI 54210. Please Note: Any registrations received prior to the December 6 or December 8 start dates (see 'When to Register' below) will be processed at noon that day.

Friends of The Clearing Discount:

As with all things that are not “usual” this year, there will not be the usual 10% Friends of The Clearing discount for Winter Program class tuition. Due to hardships created by the pandemic, The Clearing is unable to offer this benefit during these challenging times. Thank you for your understanding. Learn more about becoming a Friend of The Clearing.

Friends of The Clearing Life Members:

If you are a Life Member, please be sure to include the Life Member CODE you have received on the registration form. Learn more about becoming a Life Member of Friends of The Clearing.

Scandia Residents:

There are no classes scheduled at Scandia Village this year.

Cancellation Policy:

If The Clearing cancels a class in cooperation with or at the request of the instructor, you will receive a full refund. In 2022 only, if you are feeling ill and you are registered for an in-person class, please stay home for the health and safety of others. All 2022 Winter Program class cancellations will include a refund of any payment made for a class minus a $10 processing fee.

Severe Weather:

During severe weather, view WBAY, channel 2 (this seems to be the most consistent TV source for Gibraltar school’s status) or listen to WDOR, 910 AM/93.9 FM. If Gibraltar Schools are cancelled, all Clearing class sessions for that day are cancelled. If Gibraltar Schools have a late start, morning class sessions for that day at The Clearing are cancelled, afternoon class sessions will be held and full day classes will have the same delay as Gibraltar. If in doubt, please call The Clearing at 920-854-4088. Do not call Gibraltar Schools.

If class sessions are cancelled due to severe weather, make-up sessions (if any) will be coordinated between the instructor and The Clearing.

Potluck Notes:

In order to ensure the safety of you, fellow students, instructors and staff, no Clearing Potlucks will be scheduled in 2022.

Helpful Things to Remember:

Keep your class listing & confirmation documents handy! It will help answer many of your questions.

Drive slowly at The Clearing. We sand the roads when conditions warrant it, but nothing helps as much as slowing down, especially on the curves! Most of the roads through The Clearing are one-way. Please follow the exit signs from the parking areas. The "spur" roads off the main campus road, are two-way so please be on the lookout for others who may be coming from the other direction. Online maps and directions are always available at, mouse over the About Us tab for a pull down menu, look for Maps & Directions and click on it.

Trails and roads at The Clearing can be uneven and rough in places. Be sure to wear appropriate winter clothing and sturdy footwear.

The Clearing takes registrations up to the start date of a class. If a class is full, wait lists are established and utilized to maximize participation in the case of someone else dropping from a class.

Buildings and Grounds:

The Clearing is a rustic, natural place. The paths around buildings are flagstone. Paths in the woods and meadows and along the escarpment cliff are bare soil or have a sawdust or wood chip surface. Rocks and tree roots are at the surface in some areas on these paths, so care should be taken when walking. Good walking shoes and a walking stick are helpful.

Although The Clearing has made many improvements with regard to making the buildings and grounds more accessible for those with physical disabilities, some people may have issues related to accessibility. Please call The Clearing to discuss any concerns you have regarding accessibility.

Admission Policy:

Students should be at least 18 years old to attend classes at The Clearing. All students are welcome at The Clearing regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality or ethnic origin.

Office and Jens Jensen Visitor Center Hours:

Weekdays 8 - 4

Note: The Clearing office is also closed on December 23, 24, 30 & 31.
