What is a prairie and why are they important? What plants grow there? What insects and animals live in a prairie? How do you grow and maintain a prairie or pollinator habitat? Autumn in the prairie brings a suite of colors and interest. Enjoy a daylong field tour of prairie sites in northern Door County with ecologist Bob Bultman to explore the magic of pollinator and grassland habitats in the Fall. Get up close to learn prairie plant ID as well as tips on successful pollinator gardening and prairie installation and management. We will also be on the lookout for the endangered rusty patched bubble bee. If the weather is pleasant, our lunch will be a picnic in the prairie. Bring a blanket! For this late season class, we will be able to collect seeds from some prairie grasses and flowers to take home with you. This class will involve a fair amount of walking through both short and tallgrass prairies. Carpooling is needed for this class. We will be visiting some prairies on private property that are not accessible to the public. Dress for the weather and wear footwear for off-road terrain. Bring a water bottle as well as a clippers, bucket and a bag for seed collecting. A hand lens or magnifying glass and plant and insect ID books can be helpful. The class will be held rain or shine. Bob will contact students prior to the class.
