Moku-hanga, meaning “wood print”, is a centuries old woodblock printmaking technique requiring a few simple hand tools, fine-grained wood, water-based pigments and lovely Japanese paper. All materials are non-toxic and no bulky printing press is needed. Only a small table space is required to make beautiful, hand-made wood prints.
In this class, you will learn to design, carve, and print your own drawings from shina plywood onto Japanese paper. Alfred’s goal will be for you to acquire the skills to make mokuhanga prints long after the class has ended. No previous experience is necessary to take this class.
Please bring photos or drawings that you’d like to use to create your own prints. Also bring an apron or smock. All students must bring a Japanese Woodblock Printmaking Kit from Mcclains Printmaking Supplies, http://www.imcclains.com, item number E5900, or the equivatools. This kit costs around $85. The kit includes gouges, ink, a brush, paste, oil, woodblocks, postcards and instructions. If you have questions about anything please contact Alfred at, alfred.stark.artist@gmail.com.
