Class #36

Primitive Rug Hooking

Cathy Tokheim

August 22 - August 28, 2021

instructor imagePrimitive rug hooking is a creative art that lends itself to exploration. There are very few hard-and-fast rules to follow, which allows for endless individual expression through color and texture. This class is an open studio class, so students of all levels can bring the pattern of their choice for color planning and guidance. Your project can be new or an ongoing pattern. The class will discuss designing patterns, transferring patterns, color planning and finishing techniques, as well as texture, value, temperature and families of color for your project.

Cathy will color plan any projects, if needed, on the first day of the class. If you’d like, bring a project on which to work during the first day of class while you wait for color planning. Cathy feels that your project should follow your vision and her focus will be to help you accomplish that vision. Come for a fun, informative and relaxing week of creativity. It’s a journey and a process, and we love to share what we know with new friends.

Please bring a frame or a 14-inch heavy-duty quilting hoop, a notebook, your hook, a sharp scissors or cutter, your pattern and any materials you’d like to use for your project. Please bring any completed projects to share with the class. Cathy will have yards of “as is” and hand-overdyed wool, along with her patterns.

Cathy Tokheim, of Old Friends Woolens, lives in northern Iowa but is a native of Duluth, Minnesota. She is a color and design enthusiast, always ready to color plan, edit or embellish a project. She has been hooking and designing patterns since 1998 and has taught at rug camps and schools around the Midwest. She is a wide-cut enthusiast but has the background and experience to teach all rug styles. Her personal style is “cottage primitive” with hand-cut, textured wool. She’s been a contributor to Rug Hooking Magazine several times. Cathy enjoys the exploration of new color palettes using textured, over-dyed and “as is” wool. She loves to help students think outside their normal color box to develop new, exciting combinations to give them the rug they want.

Cathy will contact students prior to class and will have supplies on hand to purchase.
