Class #36

Books By Hand: Introductory & Independent Study

Florian Bieschke

July 7 - July 13

instructor imageThis class covers terminology and techniques for the entire bookbinding process, from folding and gathering pages, to sewing the book block on linen tapes, to rounding the spine and to making the finished cover. If you have ever wondered how a book is created, this is the ideal opportunity to experience each of the required steps, while building your own journal.

You will be introduced to the characteristics of paper and other materials used by bookbinders, as well as the proper use of tools and specialized adhesives. Although all materials are provided, you are encouraged to bring any decorative papers, fabrics, photographs or artwork that you might like to incorporate into the cover of your journal.

If you have some experience with bookbinding and would like to pursue your own project as an independent student, you are most welcome to join the class. This is a great opportunity for you to use the equipment and to share techniques with others. Florian will be available to assist you in accomplishing your goal or to provide an additional helping hand at the bench when two hands are just not enough! Bring your enthusiasm and sense of humor, because both will be required on a daily basis. We make books and we have fun doing it.

Florian Bieschke has taught visual and book arts at the undergraduate level for over 20 years. After earning his master of arts degree in studio art at the University of Notre Dame, Florian went on to teach typography, printmaking, graphic design, painting and traditional English book binding at a variety of institutions, including Indiana University, Indiana State College and Purdue North Central. For seven years, Florian owned the Binder's Press in South Bend, Indiana, specializing in repairs and re-binding. He established the Atelier Bindery in Minocqua, Wisconsin in 2011 to promote and preserve English-craft hand book binding.

Florian will contact students prior to class.
