Door County Landscapes In Watercolor
August 16 - August 22
The Clearing is the perfect place to become immersed in and inspired by the beauty of nature. This watercolor class will focus on painting the Door County landscape, both the long view and the intimate close up.
In this class, you’ll explore mixing color and handling the often elusive medium of watercolor. Preparation for painting, including value studies, along with tips for good composition will be covered. Watercolor techniques, including wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet, glazing and dry brush will be explained. You’ll learn how to preserve your whites and lights through the use of negative painting and how to avoid “muddy paintings.” Chris will share interesting tips, and there will be opportunity for some experimentation. You may paint outdoors at The Clearing if you wish, but demos will be done in the studio.
Students with basic watercolor experience will feel comfortable in this class. There will be targeted demos showing ways to paint skies, rocks, trees and water. These basics will be incorporated into demonstrations of larger paintings.
Chris Sommerfelt has been painting in watercolor for over 25 years, but her passion for art began in childhood. She graduated from college with a degree in commercial art and worked as a graphic designer for over 35 years, retiring in 2017 to devote more time to painting. In addition to teaching at The Clearing, Chris taught watercolor classes in the greater Milwaukee area, tutored privately and was the mentor for Wauwatosa Artists Workshop for many years. She has exhibited her work (some award winning) in solo shows, galleries and juried exhibits across Wisconsin and in Prescott Valley, Arizona, where she now lives. Chris’s paintings can be found in private and corporate collections. Much of Chris’s work is painted from subject matter found at or near The Clearing. It is her hope that the students joining her will learn to love watercolor and The Clearing as much as she does.
A supply list will be sent prior to class and is available online.
