Bring architecture to life in wood with this engaging carving class led by Erik. Over the course of the week, you will design and carve your own Clearing-inspired building—or choose another structure that inspires you, such as your home or a favorite landmark. The class begins with an exploration of architectural forms, where you will study the unique shapes and details of historic Clearing structures and learn how to adapt them into carvings. From there, you will create your own design, whether realistic or whimsical, and transfer it into a basswood carving pattern.
Working step by step alongside Erik, you will carve your piece from start to finish. He will demonstrate each stage while offering one-on-one guidance, helping you gain confidence in using knives, gouges, and v-tools, as well as sharpening techniques and an understanding of wood properties. You will also learn how to add playful details and character to your work, giving your carving a sense of whimsy and personality.
Painting and finishing are just as important as the carving itself, so you will spend time learning easy and effective methods to bring color and depth to your piece. By the end of the week, you will have a fully finished carving—designed, carved, painted, and ready to display.
This class is ideal for intermediate carvers or confident beginners who are ready for a challenge. Participants should bring a variety of carving tools, including knives, gouges, and v-tools, as different tools will be useful at different stages. A materials fee covers basswood blocks, paints, and finishing supplies. Erik will contact you prior to class to discuss your project ideas and help you prepare for a rewarding week of carving.
Erik Rinkleff learned to carve at The Clearing in 1998. He now enjoys carving a variety of subjects, including Santas, snowmen, country characters, gnomes and wood spirits. Erik is the Creative Director of The Clearing and also owns and operates his own woodworking business, Rustic Road Studio. He has been teaching wood carving and rustic furniture classes at The Clearing for about 25 years.
