WEEK21 27sep(sep 27)6:01 pm03oct(oct 3)9:00 amHike, Bike and Paddle – Autumn #92Kelly King & Bob Bultman

Class Details

Fall in Door County brings crisp air and colorful landscapes. Invigorate your spirit and soak up the raw beauty of Door County’s world-class natural areas during this outdoor adventure week. Using various modes of transportation, you’ll explore the unique geology, vegetation and wildlife that comprise the various interdependent ecosystems of the Door Peninsula. You’ll stroll through sun-dappled forest cathedrals, ascend to grand vistas atop the Niagara Escarpment, bike along scenic country roads and kayak clear blue waters. Discussions will encompass natural history, indigenous perspectives on the rights of nature, and walking mindfully. Evenings provide an opportunity to relax and share stories around a council ring fire.

Although the week is designed to be relaxing and leisurely, you should anticipate moderate levels of physical activity for about six hours each day. Transportation modes are easily adapted to individual desires. Weather on the Door Peninsula can be unpredictable, and the class will be held outdoors as much as possible. In addition to appropriate clothing and footwear, water bottle and daypack, consider bringing a camera, journal, headlamp and binoculars.

The fees for this class can be up to $150, depending on equipment rental needs, along with potential tour fees and the Washington Island Ferry fee. Bringing your own bike is encouraged, though bike rental can be arranged for about $25 per day. Sea kayak rental will be approximately $50 for the day. Fees are payable during class to the vendor. Bob and Kelly will contact students prior to class. Carpooling is needed for this class.

Bob Bultman is a northeast Wisconsin native who takes every chance he gets to work and play outside. From his home in Baileys Harbor, Bob helps landowners maintain and enhance their native landscapes as a consulting naturalist. In 2023, he launched the Door County Prairie Company. Bob serves on the Door County Board of Supervisors and enjoys following his high school son’s sports adventures.

Kelly King was born and raised in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. She holds a bachelor of science degree in environmental education and outdoor recreation and has led outdoor adventure programs for the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay and the YMCA of Boston. She enjoys international volunteer/adventure traveling, including walking the Camino in Spain and Portugal. She works as an outdoor recreation/health teacher for the Menominee Area Public Schools in Menominee, Michigan.
