Class Details

Spring is the perfect time to begin a nature journal. After a long, cold winter we can tap into the greening earth, spring ephemerals and migratory patterns. Whether your interests are related to gardens, traveling, taking nature walks or exploring various habitats and their creatures, this class will inspire you to begin an ongoing journal of your experiences.

Cynthia’s approach includes curiosity, observation, and research into various nature-related topics. Then comes the fun—creating the pages that explore the subject details! Demonstrations and samples will show a variety of processes to create your own illustrated journal. Not having an art background will not affect your ability to do well. Being a keen observer of the natural world is a good first step.

In this class, you will learn to draw from life and also from photos, comparing how each method has its advantages. The class will delve into drawing fundamentals, sketching with graphite pencils and watercolor pencils, painting with watercolors, and using pen and ink. Informal calligraphic techniques, collage and page design/layout ideas will also be presented. You’ll work mainly in sketchbooks. Time will be spent outdoors, weather permitting. Demonstrations, individual and group guidance, and relevant samples will provide inspiration for enjoying the process of journaling. Cynthia will contact students prior to class.

Cynthia Quinn’s predilection to draw and paint was first exhibited as a young child. She would sit at an easel and paint for hours at a time. As the years went on, she devoted her time to filling sketchbooks every few months and to reading. The natural world was and is her muse. For many years, Cynthia worked as a graphic designer and art director. During that time, she also painted in watercolor and oils, and moved gradually toward teaching and studio artmaking. She has an extensive background teaching graphic design, watercolor, and oil classes in the Madison, Wisconsin area. She is a signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and has exhibited widely both regionally and nationally. In a more recent turn of events, Cynthia has been creating a body of work using fiber, fabric, embroidery, and beads. This new media focus is energizing and creates new avenues of thinking in Cynthia’s repertoire. She is translating her nature-related themes in new ways, and the cross pollination of media is rejuvenating.
