The area of philosophy known as Aesthetics asks the question: What is beauty? The popular answer is: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.†But this is only one possible answer. Perhaps beautiful things have properties that make them beautiful, regardless of what anyone thinks. Maybe beauty is a product of the creativity of the one producing what is deemed beautiful. Maybe there is no such thing as beauty! Or maybe everything is beautiful! This class will address both theory and practice as it relates to beauty. We will examine the philosophical foundation of the five theories just identified. Then we will turn our attention to examples of created beauty: taking a virtual tour of three unusual art museums; having a class “show and tellâ€; and maybe even hosting a guest artist!
