Ancient Greek is the linguistic and cultural foundation of much of our modern world. Whether in stories, plays, letters, satires, or declarations of war, this abundant and delightful language points toward the richness of history. In this course designed for true beginners, we will take a look at the history of Greek writing and thought, tracing its evolution from the Classical period through the early Middle Ages. We will begin to become familiar with the Greek alphabet and common phrases in Classical texts, and we will spend time looking at examples of poetry, drama, and passages from the New Testament. By the end of these sessions, participants will be equipped to continue self study in Attic and/or Koine (Biblical) Greek and will be well-resourced for further exploration and the ability to use an index or interlinear. No prior knowledge of Greek is necessary for participation — just a spirit of adventure.
