Here’s a great opportunity to spend a week in The Clearing’s Workshop, with a limited number of other woodworkers, building a piece (or two) of fine furniture of your choosing—a table, a cabinet or a desk. It’s your choice! If you have a home shop, you can start a project at The Clearing and complete it at home.

The week is geared toward intermediate and experienced woodworkers. The Clearing’s Workshop is well-equipped with all of the power tools you’ll need for your project, along with workbenches and plenty of space. And of course, there is a wonderful view of the waters of Ellison Bay!

Curt will be available to help with design and technique questions. He will contact you approximately six weeks before class to discuss your project and the supplies you’ll need. Please bring any of your own woodworking tools, including hand tools and measuring and marking tools. And bring your own wood, if desired. Otherwise, wood can be supplied by Curt. General and finishing supplies (sandpaper, glue, etc.) will be on hand. The materials fee is for wood, and depends on how much wood and what kind. Curt or Gene will contact students prior to class.

Curt Wessel builds custom furniture and cabinetry in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin and has taught a variety of woodworking classes at The Clearing. His work is found throughout Door County and is well-represented at The Clearing. He has been featured nationally in Home Furniture magazine.

Gene Kenny retired from the University of Wisconsin as a Physician Assistant in pediatric cardiac surgery in 2016 after 32 years. He is an avid woodworker and has helped with woodworking classes at The Clearing in previous years. Gene also volunteers regularly at The Clearing with woodworking projects, has built homes with Habitat for Humanity and currently is the project manager for an 1,800-foot boardwalk at Newport State Park.
