WEEK14 02aug(aug 2)6:02 pm08(aug 8)9:00 amOut of the Blue – Indigo Dying #61Kipp Inglis

Class Details

Learn of the extensive history and mix of cultures that use Indigo – the only plant that will make a blue dye, while learning to make an organic indigo vat to use in class. Indigo dye uses a very different process than all other dyes. We will be working with a Reduction vat (also referred to as the 1-2-3 vat) in order to dye our fiber items blue. Indigo is the original blue color used for blue jeans, but its use and value goes much further back in time. You will learn various techniques of creating pattern on fabric with the contrast of blue and white. Stitched shibori, folding and bundle techniques will be taught so you can choose which is more to your liking. No previous experience is needed; we will work from the very simple to more advanced techniques so everyone can feel comfortable and successful. A kit fee that covers the cost of indigo ingredients and the fabrics and tools needed during class as well as your written instructions. There will be extra indigo kits and extra supplies available for purchase during class. Kipp will contact students prior to class.

Kipp has been involved in the fiber world for well over 30 years, started as a quilter and sewist, sold hand-dyed wool for 20 years at national quilt shows. After becoming concerned about adding to the growing pollution problem, she sought a transition to a more sustainable and healthy practice. She joined a class being taught in Iowa, foraging dye plants from a restored prairie. From that point on, she committed to a practice of using plant dyes and benign ingredients to obtain color on fiber. Kipp has had the privilege of learning from well-known dye masters and shibori artists from around the world when they have been available to host classes. She loves to teach and introduce the best practices for dye work along with sharing the vast history and cultural influences of indigo and natural dyes that she has been practicing for more than 10 years.
