Sumizuri-e, meaning “pictures printed in ink”, is an early form of Japanese printmaking, which uses a single color from a single block to create beautiful woodblock prints. Printed by hand, with black sumi ink, on Japanese paper, sumizuri-e is a nontoxic, water-based process, requiring only a few simple hand tools, and a small table space on which to ink, carve, and print. In addition to creating their own sumizuri-e prints, students will learn how to create effective compositions in black-and-white. Alfred will contact students prior to class.
