Stranded knitting and intarsia knitting are two very different methods used by knitters to introduce color into their knitting. Florence Spurling has combined these two techniques into one project with the Scout Series of patterns (https://shopflorencespurling.com/collections/scarves-shawls-cowls). In this class students will pick one of the Scout patterns for a project.

This class is for intermediate knitters. Some previous experience with colorwork knitting is necessary. While the class will cover the techniques for both stranded knitting and intarsia, most of emphasis will be on techniques needed to combine the two and manage multiple knitting charts simultaneously. To that end, the class will also discuss and demonstrate the use of the Knit Companion as a tool for assembling multi-part knitting charts. Along the way, we will also discuss ideas for customization, use of color, and finishing including blocking.

Students should pick their Scout project (Scout Mini Shawl, Folky Scout Mini Shawl or, for the ambitious, the Scout Shawl) before class and come with the pattern and needed yarn.

Students should bring standard knitting supplies as well as yarn and knitting needles appropriate for their project. If interested in using Knit Companion to manage the graphs in the project, students will need an active subscription installed on a mobile device (both iOS and Android versions are available). Robin is a retired cell biologist who has been knitting most of her life. She has been coming to The Clearing for about 10 years and has enjoyed a number of knitting classes. This is her second year teaching at The Clearing.
